ECONOMY IN THE SLUM OF MATHARE:
The slum of Mathare is like any other slums in the rest of the world, Whereby most of the people living in there are single parents.The population of the dwellers living in the slum is over half amillion and 80% of them are jobless and they do small-scale business to earn their living while 20% are those who are a bit welloff as a result of owningshanties of which they rent.
In the slum there are various kinds of businesses varying from:
ROASTING OF MAIZE: This takes place by the roadside and done by both male and femalein order to support their families, maize is obtained from a local market.
SELLING OF CLEAN WATER: This is another source of generating income to some of dwellers by selling it others .Water has been one of the most big problem in the slum and is inadequate.
SELLING OF GREEN VEGETABLE/FISH ,MEAT: This has been the most common business operated by many dwellers. This business plays a major role in providing the dwellers with food and it has the highest number of customers.
SELLING OF PARAFFIN: Apart from fire wood paraffin is the alternative source of energy hence creating a market for it.
CLINICS: Skilled people in this field often run clinics business to cater for the high number of people living in the slum.
A part from few mentioned small businesses, there are other means of making money like collecting and selling of waste papers, plastic bags and scrap metals which are recyclable.
