MATHARE

This is the biggest slum area in Nairobi and probably the largest in Africa which accomodate a larger area of the land and high population of people. Houses are conjested because of lack of space and most slum dwellers are jobless finding it difficult to pay rent.
Most of the houses in the slums are built near the river for easy drainage of water.

In such places you may find a sewage running from point to point passing at peoples doorsteps. Life in the slum is very dificult and it's a matter of survival for the fittest but life has to go on. During rainny season people encounter very many problems due to poor housing and improper sanitation methods and this encourages rapid increase of contagious diseases such as cholera and typhoid. Despite of all these disadvantages, life here is very cheap.
