Lack of opportunity for further education and skills deficit among the youth in Kenya is one of the contributing factors to youth unemployment, poverty among the youth, general household poverty, and one of the greatest challenges facing Kenya today.
Kenya’s chance to tackle poverty highly depends on the extent to which there is expanded opportunity for secondary education and skills training for youth in Kenya.
NairoBits Trust empowers marginalized youth between the ages of 15-24 living in the Urban informal settlements by training them in ICT Multimedia, entrepreneurship and Sexual Reproductive Health and empowering more girls to take up ICT.

This group face many reproductive health challenges which include HIV & AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, sexual exploitation, sexual violence, teenage pregnancy, unsafe abortion, school dropouts, menstrual problems, pregnancy related problems, side effects of use of contraceptives, unprotected sex, cervical cancers, Gender-based violence , drugs and substance abuse and harmful practices like early marriages, early forced marriages and female genital cutting. In order to reduce these risky sexual behaviors, NairoBits is implementing the Get Up Stand Out! ICT is taking a central role in all aspects of life and some cultures excludes girls by favoring and preparing only boys for ICT and technical skills and jobs, hence the digital and technical divide especially for marginalized girls. Working in the informal settlements has exposed us to issues affecting young girls leading to increased rate of school dropout among the girls, unwanted pregnancies leading to early marriages. These girls don’t get to continue with their education and miss out on lack of opportunities due to lack of adequate skillset for the job market. NairoBits is bridging this by advocating for equal educational skills and access opportunities for girls from Nairobi slums. We will also lobby at the employment level for equal job opportunities to prove that our girls have the same capabilities with our boys.
In 2015, Nairobits received set up three girls centres targeting marginalized girls aged 17 to 19 from Mathare, Kibera, Korogocho, Huruma, Kawangware, Dandora and Kariobangi settlements in Kenya’s Capital. To overcome the challenges that girls face, NairoBits works in partnership with organizations to empower them and equip the girls wholly to fit and retain their positions at the workplace.
