Conceptualization
Introduction

This lesson is about concepts, ideas and themes and the role these play in design. In the lesson we talk about these issues and make a storyboard first seperately and then join all storyboards to one whole.

  • A concept is a general idea derived or inferred from specific instances or occurrences.
  • Something formed in the mind; a thought or notion.
  • All projects begin with an idea. Quality concepts are great ideas supported by knowledge of materials, technology, and storytelling techniques while remaining aware of construction requirements. A strong concept design is the first step in creating a solid, successful product

Activities
    Opening (60 mins)
  • Introduction to the lesson
  • Warming up
  • Homework discussion

    Work: (120 mins)
  • Trainer: explains the role of concepts in design
  • Student exercise: each individual comes up with a theme for a and make a storyboard.
  • Student exercise: all the students combine all the storyboards to come up with a concept for a new story that combines all the small stories
  • make a flow chart of how the story will flow.

    Closing (60 mins)
  • Student: Presentation and discussion
  • Trainer: closing talk, homework and evaluation

Warming up
15 mins
It was around president's day, and I made up a worksheet in which I started the sentence...

"If I were president, I would...."

I asked the students to fill in anything they would want to do if they were president. The responses were amazing. I thought that this would be a good way for students to see the good ideas other students have.

This idea can be adapted in a variety of ways, encouraging students to think what they would do in other people's situation e.g. prime minister, queen, manager of sports team, head teacher at school

Homework Discussion
Discussion of the previous homework
Brainstorming session - story theme
the students are going to choose a theme that they feel comfortable translating to a storyboard, and the storyboards will be first planned on paper then applied on computer so the production will be on the computer, and I was also thinking of giving them a theme but then I felt like it will constrain them from what they really want to tell in the storyboard.
Exercise - a story
Each individual comes up with a theme for a storyboard.
  1. Give each student in the class a copy of the storyboard sheet found here.
  2. Ask them to make up a story about anything that they want.
  3. Ask them to draw the events of the story in the larger boxes in the sheet. The smaller boxes are for text, but they should not fill these in at the moment.
  4. When the children have finished their drawings, collect in the storyboards, mix them up, and give them back (but not to the correct individual). Now, each student should be looking at a storyboard which is not their own.
  5. They should now look carefully at the pictures, and make up some text to go with them.
  6. When this is done, the writer and the artist should get together and look at what each other have done. Does the artist agree with the story that the writer has made? Was this what the artist had in mind at the beginning

Exercise - one parent story
All the students work toegther combine all the storyboards to come up with concept for a new story that will feature all the elements they had earlier conceptualized on their personal story boards.

Exercise - flow Students now will also come up with a flow chart of how the story will flow.
Presentations and discussion

The students present there final work from the previous exercises

Closing Talk - Prepare students for the next lesson
- Give evaluation forms and homework
- Ask what they have learnt that they didn't know before.

Homework On the way home today look at the people around you and guess at theri destination and their motivation today. Think about their stories.
Learning goals

Knowledge* students knows
- Getting into a creative and productive state of mind
- Applying and Understanding principles
- Learn design concepts and how to work with them.
Skills* students can
- Use Linear and Hyper Navigation when designing concepts·
- Make objects visible and intuitive
Attitudes* students feel
- Create a feeling of progress and achievement·
- The idea is to emphasize the content, not the mechanism
